Schwaz is a small charming town in the Tyrol, and close to skiiling on Kellerjoch, 20 minutes by train from Innsbruch, but far away from the ski-bunnies and crowds. I was lucky enough to spend a week in Schwaz teaching a one week intensive course at the high school, and spent an afternoon at the top of Kellerjoch after class!
The town is in the Tux Alps, a sub-group of the Austrian Alps Inn River and the rugged Tux Alps, with the Inn River flowing through the town. Schwaz allows easy access to Kellerjoch – the nearest skiing mountain, but also allows easy access to the skiing around Innsbruck. Other attractions include a guided tour of the old silver mine (Schwazer Silberbergwerk), and walks in the nearby vallies.

Skiing Kellerjoch: A Friendly Local Mountain
What to Expect
- Kellerjoch is family‑friendly ski area above Schwaz. You’ll find gentle to intermediate pistes, wide slopes ideal for carving, and classic Tyrolean huts for lunch.
- On clear days, the panoramic views sweep across the Inn Valley to the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps.
- Outside winter, Kellerjoch is a hiking and mountain‑bike area; in late winter and spring, ski tourers head for the ridge lines.

How to Get from Schwaz to Kellerjoch
There are two common approaches; check seasonal operations and snow conditions before you go.
- By public transport + lift:
- From Schwaz train station or town center, take a short regional bus or taxi to the Kellerjochbahn base in Pill/Arzberg (often listed as Kellerjochbahn Schwaz-Pill).
- Ride the gondola/chairlift combo up to the ski area. Lift operations can vary by season and weekday; verify the current timetable and which sections are running.
- The ski-lift closes at 4pm, so make sure our on it in time, or you’ll get a stern talking to from the lift operator (as me and my colleague did when we were 5 minutes late back to the ski-lift). We thought for a moment we were spending the night on the mountain,,,
- By car:
- Drive from Schwaz toward Pill (about 10–15 minutes depending on traffic). You can hire a rental car. If not are available in Schwaz, you can hire one in Innsbruck.
- Follow signs for Kellerjochbahn and park at the lift base. Roads are well maintained, but winter tires/chains may be advised after heavy snow.

Tips:
- Buy or recharge your ski pass at the base; some regional passes cover multiple small areas.
- Arrive early in peak season weekends for parking and shorter lines.
